I have a 28 month old son who is behind in his speech/language development. He knows about 25 words right now. Surprisingly he does not become frustrated by his lack of language and is a pretty well behaved 2 year old. He is by no means perfect but overall I can’t complain. I have already had him evaluated by a developmental specialist and his pediatrician who both said they do not suspect Autism or anything else other than a speech delay. About 4 weeks ago he started working with a speech therapist who comes to our home. For the first 3 times she came, she had my son sit in a high chair and gave him a toy and allowed him to play with it…then she wanted him to “earn” additional pieces of the toy by pointing to body parts. My son has not responded well to this at all 🙁 He throws fits and then we lose him completely. The next time she came she gave him the toy and then took it away completely and tried to have him “earn” it back by saying a word…before she could even say what she wanted him to say we lost him completely b/c he was frustrated that the toy was taken away. The most recent time she came over we tried the lesson in his room where he could move about without being confined to the high chair. He still wouldn’t give her the time of day and threw fits like he never does at any other time. 🙁 He was screaming “NO!” and throwing himself on the ground. He never acts that way at any other time. And I swear I don’t just let him have his way all the time at home. I actually am a pretty strict momma. He really is a pretty laid back kid but for some reason he is just not responding to the speech therapist and I don’t know why. 🙁
